Our History

In 1970, Hildegard Messenbaugh, MD—a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver—was approached by concerned community members about the growing number of adolescents living on the streets. Many of these young people fled turbulent and traumatic family situations, had trouble with the law, or had recently left other institutional settings. With her guidance and the support of the Denver community, an alternative to homelessness and incarceration for troubled youth was formed. Third Way Center grew from one shelter for at-risk teens to eight houses across the metro area, providing a continuum of services and offering a path to healing and wholeness through:
- A continuum of care in a home-like residential setting at five metro Denver locations
- Accurate diagnosis and individualized therapy: Individual, Family, Group
- Two state-approved alternative high schools
- We are youth-focused, family-driven
- Life skills training
- Job training and vocational education
- Parenting skills training
- Emancipation support
Over the past 55 years, Third Way Center has helped transform the lives of thousands of teens by empowering them to build better lives for themselves and their future families. To date, we have established a one-of-a-kind brain trauma unit with over 150 dedicated staff members working together towards a common goal: helping our children heal.
